When I was a little kid, I was lucky enough to have a television in my bedroom. It was a black-and-white set with a dial you had to turn to find one of the 13 channels. No remote, no streaming, just good old-fashioned television!
I loved spending hours watching my favorite shows and often fell asleep with the TV on. Funny enough, I still do that occasionally, although now I have the luxury of a sleep timer!
Saturday mornings were filled with cartoons, I Love Lucy, The Little Rascals, and The Three Stooges. I would laugh and laugh! Looking back, I realize those shows helped shape my sense of humor and sparked my lifelong love of black-and-white movies.
Even today, some of my favorite movies include Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, Psycho, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and Niagara with Marilyn Monroe.
A few years later, I inherited my grandmother’s color television. Suddenly, my cartoons were in beautiful color, and I thought it was the greatest thing ever!
But I remember being completely confused when I turned on I Love Lucy and it was STILL in black and white! LOL! In my young mind, if the television was in color, shouldn’t everything be in color?
Looking back, that little television was more than just entertainment. It introduced me to classic comedy, Hollywood movies, and memories that have stayed with me for a lifetime.
Funny how some of our most colorful childhood memories were made in black and white.
