Diabetes

For a few days now Castor and I have been feeling very thirsty all the time. We thought it may be the turmeric we were taking daily, so we stopped.

Things got a little better but we noticed that Castor had lost some weight, and was still drinking a lot of water and urinating. He looked very tired so on his day off he slept sixteen hours and woke up feeling better. Then on Saturday while at work he said his eyes were blurry and with that we headed to Urgent Care after work.

The MD took his glucose levels and told us it was 316 and we needed to go the ER to be seen as he simply did not have the equipment we needed to be diagnosed. Off to KMC, we went, thinking it would be packed after all it was a Saturday night at 7 pm. Moments after arriving, we were brought back to a private room and three nurses went to work on him. All asking the same question “Do you have diabeties?” Castor just smiled and said that’s what we are trying to find out.

His glucose was at 310 and they gave him insulin to bring it down as we waited for the blood work to return. They did a chest x-ray (clear) and after some time waiting for the results they informed us he was diabetic. Since he had pancreatitis back in 2007 he was told this could happen someday, so he was not too surprised. The MD was leaning towards Type 1 but when the last lab results came back she was unable to determine which type it was. We left with a prescription and would need to check in with out regular MD to follow up.

Two days after being in the hospital, we saw our MD and he did blood work that indicated Type 2. We have been logging Castor’s glucose levels and he averages around 136 but does have spikes above 250. With the new pill, we hope to see a leveling out of his glucose levels.
