When Grandma Bobi (GB) returned to Concord, I spent more time with her and Grandpa and learned about their music. They had albums of swing music. This was the first time I learned about this high-energy music from Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman. I remember the song Yes! We Have No Bananas, In The Mood, and Sing, Sing, Sing.
I remember as a little kid, playing New York, New York in my room and reacting to the song with choreography and loving it. Years later I found out GB also enjoyed Frank Sinatra and I discovered all his songs, and became a huge fan, with my favorite song being Fly Me To The Moon. GB also loved Engelbert Humperdinck, who I never heard of before, but enjoyed a few of his songs, but the one that stuck with me was After Lovin’. In a strange twist, we played that song in marching band as part of the field show in 1985.
