Day 4: Bike riding

Today we drove down to Victoria Harbour, unloaded the bikes, and hit the trails. We started at the visitor’s center and followed the routes to the Fishard lighthouse, the first one Castor had ever seen; we also discovered it was also the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada as well.

The ride was wonderful, the trail was very well-marked and allowed us to go fast and we zipped along in our private bike lane.

Fisgard Lighthouse was built in 1860 to guide vessels through the entrance of Esquimalt harbour. It was named after HMS Fisgard, a British Navy ship that spent time in the Pacific.

Along with the lighthouse there was an old military fort, Fort Rodd Hill that was hidden behind the lighthouse. They did a fantastic at blending the fort into the surrounding area. They even disguised a gun inside a boat shed so aircraft would not identify it.
